Speed Identification Device

The Speed Identification Device is owned by the Parish Council and is licenced for use in Mill Road, High Street and Thrapston Road. It has two purposes: to collect data relating to the speed of  vehicles approaching the device and to act as an interactive sign displaying a driver's speed.

The device records a vehicle speed for the final 40-50 metres approach to the sign and logs the speed and time. This data will be shared with the relevant authorities to enable targeted speed enforcement to take place.

NB The device is programmed to not display speeds above 60mph but speeds are still recorded.

A summary of the data, (number of vehicles travelling between specified dates at specified speeds)  is shown below

Definitions

V85% is the speed at which 85% of vehicles were travelling at or below and is the internationally recognised statistic used to clarify the "speed" of a particular road. This can be used to gauge whether the current speed limit is appropriate or whether speeding is an issue, depending upon the geography of the location. Eg in a built up area (30mph zone) it could be argued that a V85% figure of 37mph means too many vehicles are speeding and enforcement is required, however, on a straight, rural road with clear visibility limited to 30mph a V85% figure of 37mph could suggest that the speed limit should be raised from 30mph to 40 mph.
